Welcome

Welcome to the YMCA South Devon website. Here you can navigate about to find  different activities & programmes that we have running at any one time; you’ll find the departments, events past and future and historical information about our centre. Use the icons above for quick access to our departments!

A YMCA has been in Torbay for over 100 years and that packs in a lot of history. We are always interested in finding out more, so if you know something you think we might not, please tell us! Contact Ken at ken.m@ymcasouthdevon.org.uk

We are a not-for-profit organisation that works autonomously from other YMCAs. We serve young people, their families and the communities of Torbay and the South Hams and pride ourselves on offering excellent service to all. Our various programmes and events help create a sustainable future for our charity. We reinvest in our facilities and our staff to continue developing what it is that we can offer.

Ofsted Summer 2017

During the Summer Holidays Ofsted came to visit our childcare departments & we’re very pleased to announce that we received a ‘Good’, maintaining our brilliant childcare offering. We were extra pleased with this result given that we’ve also opened a Nursery in this time.  You can head to our Ofsted page for more information.

In summary the report said:
– Staff are good role models who provide children with constant praise and encouragement. Children behave well, and are happy and settled. They display good levels of confidence and self-esteem.
– Children who have special educational needs and/or disabilities receive good support from the passionate and knowledgeable staff, who work closely with other professionals to support children’s needs. Staff target planning to children’s needs so that all children make good progress from their starting points.
– Partnerships with parents and other settings are strong. There are many opportunities for parents and other settings to be involved with children’s learning and development using the online system.
– The dedicated manager reflects on the quality of service well. He considers the views of staff, parents and children when evaluating the success of any changes and when planning future improvements.

A History

The YMCA South Devon has been in its existing location since 1969 when it was formally opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mother on the 8th May.

In the years leading up to this momentous occasion we were awarded £31,000 (then a huge sum) and secured an additional £3000 to help cover costs of a new building and equipment which would replace tired and dilapidated structures once used in Paignton. A multi-purpose centre considered “attractive enough to compete with all the up-to-date mediums of youthful entertainment” was assembled just off from the recently built Dartmouth Road. A message from CEO, Maria Goodwin

Our YMCA has been through a tremendous journey over the last eighteen months and as the CEO I look forward to the challenges ahead with anticipation but also with much enthusiasm as myself and my staff prepare for the future. This website will give you an idea of the work we currently do, the projects we have been involved in and our plans for the continuation of our charitable work along with some ideas for fundraising.
